Project: 'NY Townhouse' Black Cellar
Collaborators: Vin de Garde Wine Systems & Curious Yellow Designs NYC
Vin de Garde Modern Wine Cellars and Curious Yellow Designs’ collaborative ‘Black Cellar’, often referred to as the ‘NY Townhouse Project’ bridges modern and contemporary elements that match seamlessly with the overall New York-style home in which the unit dwells. The team at Curious Yellow Designs was introduced to Vin de Garde when their client requested the addition of a custom wine room in the home.
Originally, the space was 16,000 square feet comprised of 15 separate apartments. Today, the building has been transformed into a modern and contemporary masterpiece --- a single family dwelling unit illuminated by natural light. This high-design interior revamp included a fresh color palate, a 1000-bottle custom wine cellar, a new kitchen, bathroom, refreshed décor, and new, modern/contemporary custom furniture.
The creation of the richly textured ‘Black’ NY Townhouse wine cellar was a joint effort incorporating Vin de Garde’s modern-minimalist style wine cellar design, and the sophisticated and elegant vision of Curious Yellow Designs.
“The client’s main goal was to include a ‘high bottle capacity storage system’ that could house up to 1000 bottles, including large magnum bottles, while maintaining the contemporary aesthetics found throughout the home”
When designing the space, the client’s main goal was to include a ‘high bottle capacity storage system’ that could house up to 1000 bottles, including large magnum bottles, while maintaining the contemporary aesthetics found throughout the home. The resulting project covers a finished area of 8ft x 18ft.
The cellar begins with a frameless glass-walled entrance that allows visibility from throughout the main level of the home. Custom LED lights were installed throughout the cellar to highlight the wine collection. Special attention was paid to the showpiece of the cellar, a stunning panel of backlit Jade Onyx. Curious Yellow’s history of working with stone, marble and texture created the character and dimension that brought this element to life. Black was the color chosen to best showcase the wine and wood finishing, and highlight the onyx.
Embodying a modern and vivacious contemporary attitude, the customized space utilized Vin de Garde’s iconic Nek Rite series< and XY series. A custom-made solid walnut cabinet that housed a dedicated hygrometer, circulating humidity into the space, complimented the modern hardware. Temperature is also regulated by this sophisticated environmental control system.
